Human pheromones influence human behavior.

Abstract
Androsterone, utilized in this study, has the scent of fresh sweat. It constitutes an individual, characteristic odor for men and to some extent for other primates, being a component of chemical secretions, including androstenol, which influences both luteinizing hormone (LH) levels and women’s mood. LH serves as a hormonal gauge of diet-dependent sexual maturity and fertility, stimulated by mammalian pheromones. Paradigms of conditioned reflex formation in mammals suggest that androstenol induces hormonal responses in females, which can be automatically associated with the influence of androsterone on women’s behavioral changes.

We analyzed individual fifteen-minute video recordings depicting interactions among fourteen women in the fertile phase of their cycle (with peak LH concentration) while performing a group task. The male study participant was alternatively sprayed with two substances: a standardized mixture of androstenol and androsterone diluted in propylene glycol or just the solvent – smelling of sandalwood, to avoid him being aware of the substance choice.

Women made more eye contact with the man when the mixture was applied (t(12) = 3.43, p= .01; IRR: r = .964, p = .01), compared to when only the solvent was applied. Women laughed more frequently (t(12) = 5.20, p<.01; IRR: r = .8.10, p = .01), and subsequently rated the man as more attractive (t(12) = 2.786, p = .016).

The results of our study combine the already known influence of androstenol on LH and mood with the likely impact of androsterone on behavioral changes. These findings also address opposing views and incorporate women into the eusocial insect model, illustrating the epigenetic effects of diet and pheromone action on hormonally modified gene expression during behavioral development.

Our mixture highlights species-specific human pheromones, their epigenetic influence on physiology, and behavior. The results of our study are consistent with the confirmed, enduring, decades-old concept of pheromones, applicable to all species.
